There is something in the water terrorizing Newfoundland, and apparently the local fishing community has already used up its supply of calm.
Josh Hartnett, Charlie Heaton and Mackenzie Davis lead Netflix’s new six-episode thriller Below, where a mysterious sea creature turns one remote town’s already-fragile way of life into an all-out fight for survival.
All six episodes arrive October 8, just in time for the Halloween fright season and for the ocean to once again remind us that humans have absolutely no business acting this comfortable near deep water.

Josh Hartnett Is A Fisherman With Family Problems And A Monster Problem
Hartnett stars as Calvin Penney, a big-hearted but stubborn fisherman still haunted by his father’s mysterious death decades earlier. He is already trying to hold together a fractured family when an unidentified creature begins terrorizing the waters off his hometown.
Because apparently grief, fatherhood and a dying fishing economy were not enough. Calvin must protect his son Wade, played by Charlie Heaton, while keeping the wider community from collapsing under fear, secrets and whatever is circling below the surface.
Mackenzie Davis plays visiting marine researcher Fonda Howander, who joins Calvin in trying to identify the creature before it wipes out more than the town’s catch of the day.
Below Is Not Just A Monster Story With Better Outerwear
Creator and showrunner Jesse McKeown sets the terror against Newfoundland’s rugged coast, using the creature as pressure on a place already dealing with isolation, family fractures and a vanishing way of life.
The official setup blends local myth, suspense and dark humor, which is encouraging because six straight episodes of wet screaming can only carry a person so far.
The stronger hook is the community itself. Calvin is not merely hunting a monster; he is trying to stop fear from breaking apart the people who have survived everything else together.
The Cast Has Enough Baggage Before The Creature Even Arrives
Alongside Hartnett, Heaton and Davis, the cast includes Willow Kean, Ruby Stokes, Rohan Campbell and Kaleb Horn as members of Calvin’s family and the close-knit town pulled into the crisis.
Hartnett also serves as an executive producer, while directors Jamie Childs, Helen Shaver and Stephen Dunn split the six episodes. The series was filmed in Newfoundland, giving all that cold water, sharp rock and miserable weather the benefit of being genuinely cold, sharp and miserable.
