Of Course Angelyne Would Be the One to Put a Billboard in the Sky

Pioneer entertainer Angelyne — our forever muse-inspo and Los Angeles’ eternal Billboard Queen — has found a new place for her image: the actual sky.
Angelyne partnered with SKYAD, a new out-of-home advertising format from Los Angeles creative drone company Heads in the Sky, to launch the concept with exactly the kind of spectacle that makes too much sense for her to pass up.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, about 300 drones rose beside the 101 freeway in July and hovered for roughly 15 minutes, forming Angelyne’s face and a telephone number in the night sky. Heads in the Sky co-founder Kevin Prince says the launch took nearly a year of planning with Angelyne and her longtime collaborator Scott Hennig.

The Billboard Queen Was Always Going to Outgrow the Billboard
Four decades pushing on and on, Angelyne has always understood the assignment: put the image exactly where she wants it and make the city look back. Long before “personal brand” became something people said into ring lights, she turned giant roadside portraits, a phone number and a pink Corvette into one of Los Angeles’ most instantly recognizable self-made myths.
That is why SKYAD feels less like a random celebrity endorsement and more like a glass-slipper fit. The company describes the format as a dynamic drone-show billboard built to turn one aerial display into a larger campaign through content capture, social amplification and earned media. Prince has pitched the format as a modern alternative to a static billboard — one designed to create a short, highly visible moment rather than simply sit in place for weeks.
And Angelyne, naturally, did not simply show up for somebody else’s concept. In THR‘s report, she makes a point of correcting the idea that anyone else directs her image. “I direct everything,” she says of her work with Hennig. That line may be the entire Angelyne operating system in four words.

The funniest part is that the whole thing almost feels preordained. Angelyne told THR that billboard entrepreneur Hugo Maisnik once predicted he would someday put her “up in the sky with lasers.” Decades later, technology finally caught up with the fantasy.
LA’s Billboard Queen has all the glitz, glamour and signature elusive euphoria intact. The medium changed. The mission absolutely did not.
