You can’t spell “Fanning” without “fan.” Earlier this month, Dakota went viral after absolutely knowing her way around “Shoes,” aka “Watch My Shoes,” from Wayne’s 2009 No Ceilings mixtape during an appearance on Track Star. Not vaguely knowing it. Not mouthing the hook. She went bar for bar.

The actress spilled the stellar news on the 2026 Emmy Awards carpet Monday night, September 14, while talking to E!’s Justin Sylvester alongside sister Elle Fanning. Asked if Wayne had seen her rap, Dakota confirmed the part every longtime fan would want to hear: he did.
“I got the stamp of approval from Lil Tunechi on Instagram. He loved it. It was a big deal. I was pinching myself.”

And then came the part that makes the whole thing even sweeter. Dakota said that if she could have told her 16-year-old self — riding in the back of her best friend’s car on the way to a high-school party — that one day Lil Wayne would see her rapping the song, DM her and say he loved it, she would never have believed it. Her exact reaction now: “freaking out beyond.”
The viral moment originally came from Dakota’s August 28 episode of Track Star, where host Jack Coyne tested her music knowledge across everything from The Beach Boys and The Runaways to Hilary Duff, Reba McEntire and Wayne. When “Shoes” came up, Dakota revealed the verse had basically been sitting in storage since high school as her party trick. Apparently the archive was still fully operational.
Years of random lyrical retention finally paid off in the most ridiculous way possible: Lil Tunechi himself signed off. That is the kind of fan-circle closure we can get behind.
