The Stars Are Out Tonight: Camila Cabello, Janelle Monáe and More at Lucas Museum Opening Night
The stars are out tonight in Los Angeles. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art rolled out the red carpet Saturday, September 19, for one of the city’s most anticipated cultural openings in years — and the museum’s press team sent INYIM its official Opening Night red carpet photo selects from the celebration.
Hosted by museum co-founders George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, the evening brought artists, musicians, filmmakers and longtime Hollywood creative forces to Exposition Park just days before the museum opens to the public on Tuesday, September 22.
For anyone wondering who Hobson is beyond sharing the spotlight with Lucas: she is a longtime business executive and philanthropist, Lucas’ wife, and the co-founder of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Together, Hobson and Lucas have spent years bringing the massive Los Angeles project from idea to reality.
INYIM’s Red Carpet Picks Put the Artists Front and Center
We’re skipping the reality-star roll call and keeping this one where INYIM lives: artists, performers and creative people we actually care about. Among the faces in our official red carpet selects were Lilly Singh, Janelle Monáe, Camila Cabello, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ron Howard, Clare Grant and Seth Green.
Camila Cabello went in the opposite direction in a shimmering gold, body-skimming look — one of the strongest red carpet moments in the selects sent our way. Cabello appears twice in INYIM’s set, photographed by two different Getty photographers over the course of the evening.
Lilly Singh arrived in a sculptural all-black look with oversized sunglasses, giving the museum’s elaborate silver-and-green red carpet backdrop plenty of room to do its thing without competing with it.
Then there was Janelle Monáe, who naturally understood the assignment. Monáe hit the carpet in a sheer, sharply detailed black look that felt completely at home at a museum built around the idea that visual storytelling can live anywhere.
Film was represented in a very Los Angeles way too. Bryce Dallas Howard arrived with her father, Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard, while actors and longtime creative couple Clare Grant and Seth Green also made their way down the carpet.
Pharrell, Voices of Fire and an Almost Black Eyed Peas Reunion
The red carpet was only the beginning. Pharrell Williams served as one of the evening’s co-chairs, and his Virginia Beach vocal collective Voices of Fire, co-founded with Bishop Ezekiel Williams, performed with an additional 75 singers. Their set included Star Wars’ “Yoda’s Theme,” “Happy” and “JOY (Unspeakable).”
After guests explored more than 30 galleries, the celebration moved to the museum’s fifth-floor rooftop for a drone show built around imagery from the collection.
Then came the surprise: it was almost Black Eyed Peas. The group performed “Let’s Get It Started,” “Where Is the Love?” and “I Gotta Feeling” — just without Fergie in the mix. Additional performances throughout the night came from LA Dance Project, Jake Shimabukuro, Xavier de Maistre, Damien Escobar, Kaki King, DJ Kiss and DJ M.O.S.
A New Los Angeles Landmark Years in the Making
The Opening Night celebration marked the arrival of a project years in the making. The Lucas Museum is housed in a 300,000-square-foot building designed by Ma Yansong of MAD with Stantec and sits within a new 13-acre campus and park in Exposition Park.
Its galleries are dedicated to narrative art across generations and mediums — from illustration and comics to photography, painting and screen art — built around Lucas and Hobson’s belief that the images people grow up with, remember and pass down deserve serious space on museum walls.

For Los Angeles, a city that has spent more than a century turning images into culture, that idea feels right at home.
The museum’s official inside selects kept the creative crowd coming, with Kerry Washington, Queen Latifah, Jack Black, Andy Garcia, Flea, Laura Dern, Cynthia Erivo, Meg Ryan, Jack Quaid, Harrison Ford, Calista Flockhart, Judy Greer, Doja Cat, Emma Watson and Cheech Marin among the familiar faces captured throughout the night.
