Song Choice of the Day: Frankie June Revives “There Will Never Be Another You”—and Nancy Norman’s Legacy

Frankie June gives the 1942 jazz standard “There Will Never Be Another You” a graceful new life while an unexpected family story reconnects the song to 1940s vocalist Nancy Norman.

Song Choice of the Day belongs to Frankie June, who has traded open-air indie pop for a little candlelit jazz on “there will never be another you.” Released July 31, the single is beautiful, vocally assured and exactly the kind of left turn we want from an artist still showing us how many rooms she can walk into.

Produced by Jacob McCaslin, the recording does not need to shove or showboat. Frankie lets the melody breathe, keeps the vocal close and controlled, and understands that technical ability lands harder when it serves the feeling instead of elbowing it out of the way.

Frankie’s recording is a cover from the heart of the 1940s jazz-and-swing era. Written by Harry Warren, with lyrics by Mack Gordon, “There Will Never Be Another You” was introduced in the 1942 film Iceland, where John Payne and Joan Merrill performed it with Sammy Kaye and His Orchestra. Kaye also recorded a separate commercial version featuring vocalist Nancy Norman; that rendition became a charting hit in 1943 and helped carry the song beyond the movie and into jazz-standard territory.

There is a touching family coda to Norman’s version. In a YouTube comment, a user writing as @TheJacobba said Nancy Norman was their mother, that she died at age 99 in 2024 and that this was her favorite song. The commenter added that “There Will Never Be Another You” appears on her grave marker and that the family still holds her original 78 rpm airchecks and recordings, along with material from other singers—a personal archive that deserves careful preservation.

Nancy Norman may have sung her last song, but Frankie June has just revived this one for a new generation.

Frankie’s reading understands that emotional split. It is romantic without becoming syrupy, polished without losing its intimacy and warm enough to make that nighttime picnic visual feel less like styling and more like the song’s natural habitat.

We previously watched the INYIM new artist turn private history into open-air pop on “Hollywood (2016)”. This time, she steps inside a classic and makes it sound quietly personal—another reminder that her best instrument is not simply that voice, but the point of view steering it.
