Thee synth-pop stellar twosome shared this project specifically to pay tribute to a lost friend named Josiah — and somehow turned grief into something that still floats, flashes and dances.

Young Ejecta’s Leanne Macomber wrote “Your Planet” for Josiah, her dear friend who died when they were just shy of 21. Her fantasy behind the song was painfully sweet: that he now had a world of his own somewhere out there, and could still look back toward Earth knowing how much she loved him.

“Your Planet” takes loss, synth-pop euphoria and one very personal memory of a friend gone too soon — then sends the whole thing somewhere cosmic.

It’s euphoric, ethereala and a musical burst of delight — all in the midst of a lyrical thesis built from real loss. The track appeared on Young Ejecta’s 2015 mini-album The Planet, with Leanne Macomber on the words and Joel Ford behind the production.

And the video goes even deeper. Macomber said it was made as a memorial for Josiah, playfully working through what it meant to lose him before adulthood had really begun. Rather than freeze him at one age, the visual imagines the paths, identities and little pieces of manhood he never got the chance to grow into.

Directed and produced by Heidi Petty, with a story by Macomber, “Your Planet” was filmed in San Francisco in the dead of winter of 2015. Juri Onuki handled choreography and dancing, Ryan Castaneda served as cinematographer, and Adam Kennedy handled editing and visual effects.

So we can only put it best. As Meryl Streep once passed along from her late friend Carrie Fisher: “Take your broken heart, make it into art.” That is basically “Your Planet” in one sentence.

The heartbreak is there. The loneliness is there. But so is thee glow. Young Ejecta did not make a memorial that sits still — they made one that moves.
