The fun of Know Their Lines? is that it flips the usual career retrospective around. Instead of asking an actor to tell the same old set story one more time, Variety pulls dialogue from past performances and asks whether the person who actually said it can recognize the words — or remember where they came from at all.
McCarthy is especially suited to the format because so much of her work lives in delivery. A line on the page is one thing; the pause, stare, escalation or complete left turn she gives it is usually where the real McCarthy magic happens. And after a career this packed, forgetting a line here and there almost feels more reasonable than remembering it.
The series itself has grown beyond Variety’s own channels. In 2026, Netflix struck a licensing deal that brought a selection of Variety-produced video programming to the service, including Know Their Lines?, where actors, musicians and other guests are challenged to identify dialogue or lyrics from their past work.
