Okay gals and gents, theater kids and A24 loyalists: the official trailer for The Debut has arrived, and Julianne Moore is heading into community-theater method-acting chaos.

The upcoming musical comedy is written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, with Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti, Halle Bailey and Eisenberg listed among the stars on A24’s official film page.

A24’s synopsis follows Mona Friedman, a shy, unassuming housewife who is cast in a bit part at a small community theater and transforms into a zealous method actor willing to do just about anything to protect the artistic integrity of her marginal role.

The setup alone is delicious. A woman who has not exactly been living in the spotlight steps into a tiny role and suddenly the stakes feel operatic, personal and a little dangerous. We love when a “small part” starts acting like the lead role in someone’s entire emotional life.

Paul Giamatti plays the show’s domineering director, the kind of local-stage tyrant who makes every note sound like it was delivered from the mountaintop. The trailer lets him push, prod and provoke while Moore’s Mona starts realizing she may not be as meek as everyone assumed.

People reports that the supporting cast also includes Cara Buono, Craig Bierko, Eldar Isgandarov and Broadway icon Bernadette Peters. Vulture also notes Havana Rose Liu among the cast, which gives this already-stacked little theater spiral even more stage-door energy.

A24 is keeping the release date listed as Coming Soon for now, so no theatrical date has been locked on the official page yet. But the trailer is already giving us all the ingredients: Moore going from reserved to ravenous, Giamatti weaponizing stage notes, and Eisenberg turning community theater into a pressure cooker.

And honestly, a movie about people taking art too seriously in a room where the budget is probably three chairs, a fog machine and someone’s aunt doing costumes? That is cinema.
