Leaning into the eerie side of Scrooge’s supernatural reckoning, the second official trailer pushes the foggy Victorian streets, rattling chains and spectral visitors even harder. Depp disappears beneath heavy age makeup to deliver one very committed “Humbug.”
The supporting cast is just as stacked. Rupert Grint plays Bob Cratchit, Sam Claflin takes on Fred, Andrea Riseborough appears as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Tramell Tillman plays the Ghost of Christmas Present and Ian McKellen steps in as Jacob Marley. Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes and Charlie Murphy also round out the film’s Dickensian world.
West is working from a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern, with the film returning to Dickens’ familiar bones: a miserly Scrooge forced to confront his past, present and future before Christmas morning. The difference here is the mood. This version looks less cozy fireside adaptation and more haunted holiday tale — which, frankly, is exactly where a story full of dead business partners and midnight spirits has always belonged.
