A Tiny Runway, a Big Laugh, and Two Comedy Originals

It’s not often you see Joan Rivers laugh this hard. You can tell she loved Pee-wee too. And watching her try to keep pace with that wonderfully strange little man, it’s easy to see why.
The official Joan Rivers Show YouTube channel has freshly restored and uploaded a delightfully unhinged 1989 appearance by Paul Reubens, fully inhabiting his Pee-wee Herman persona. The seven-minute, 50-second clip arrived on October 16, 2026, and it’s a time capsule with a surprise twist: Pee-wee wasn’t just dropping by to make Joan crack up. He came with a JCPenney children’s clothing line to show off, complete with pint-sized models.

First, naturally, there’s the comedy. Pee-wee brings out a ventriloquist dummy made in his own image, which is already enough to derail a perfectly ordinary daytime chat. He and Joan ricochet from the puppet to a life-size wax figure, microwave cooking, schoolyard bullies and the art of buttering up teachers. Then Joan goes fishing for details about his dating life, and suddenly Brooke Shields, Sigourney Weaver and even Melissa Rivers are part of the conversation. It is vintage Joan and Pee-wee: two completely different comic sensibilities having an absolute ball together.

But the greatest accessory in this restored footage might be Joan’s laughter. She’s sharp as ever, tossing out questions and one-liners, yet she keeps giving Pee-wee room to turn the whole thing into his own peculiar playground. It’s that obvious affection between the two—not just the novelty of the clothes—that makes this little piece of television worth bringing back.

Pee-wee Herman Brings His JCPenney Kids’ Collection to the Runway
Then out come the young models, and the set becomes a miniature fashion show. Pee-wee describes his range as leisurewear, with denim pieces, graphic T-shirts, printed skirts, sweatshirts and, of course, his signature suspenders. There are socks, belts, wallets and blankets in the mix, too. The looks onstage range from a denim jumper and bright tee to a Jambi the Genie sweatshirt, colorful outerwear and Pee-wee accessories. There’s even a lunchbox and doll helping complete the presentation—although the segment doesn’t establish that every prop was sold as part of the range.

This wasn’t a made-for-television gag, either. Los Angeles Times reporting from October 30, 1989, documented the JCPenney merchandise launch at Culver Studios, with clothing for children and adults alongside a broader Pee-wee universe of toys and household goods. Late-eighties retail really did have room for a whole department-store corner dedicated to the man in the tiny red bow tie.

And what a treat that the Joan Rivers archive is bringing this kind of television back into view. A forgotten fashion venture, four very game little runway models and a host who can barely contain her delight: this is exactly the sort of pop-culture oddity that deserves a second life.
Now see the complete exchange for yourself, from Joan’s laughter and Pee-wee’s miniature double to the children taking their turns on the runway.
