A suspected impaired driver fled into a Louisiana swamp, where an alligator interrupted his escape before deputies located him with a drone.

A Louisiana sheriff’s office is jokingly honoring an alligator after it interrupted a suspected impaired driver’s attempt to flee through a swamp.

The unbelievable pursuit began Sunday, June 7, after Louisiana State Police received reports of a Toyota Supra being driven recklessly along Interstate 10 near Bonnabel Boulevard in Jefferson Parish.

Authorities say the vehicle struck a concrete barrier and suffered a tire blowout before troopers later stopped it on Interstate 310 in neighboring St. Charles Parish.

The driver was identified as 40-year-old Victor M. Rivas of Montz. Troopers said they observed signs of impairment while speaking with him, but the investigation quickly turned into a foot pursuit.

According to police, Rivas fled on foot and jumped from an elevated section of Interstate 310 into the swamp below.

Louisiana State Police and deputies from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office began searching the area and eventually spotted him walking near U.S. Highway 61.

When officers approached him again, authorities say Rivas made another run for the swamp.

That is when Mother Nature said, “Not today.”

Body-camera footage shows an alligator rapidly moving toward Rivas before the two begin thrashing near the edge of the water. The animal attacked him and injured both of his arms.

Even after escaping the alligator, authorities say Rivas continued trying to evade law enforcement. A sheriff’s drone team eventually located him and directed deputies toward the area where he was leaving the swamp.

Rivas was taken to a hospital and treated for injuries that officials described as non-life-threatening.

He was later booked on charges of driving while impaired and resisting an officer. Authorities also obtained warrants connected to the earlier crash for alleged hit-and-run and careless operation.

All charges remain allegations, and Rivas is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The sheriff’s office could not resist acknowledging the unexpected assistance. It shared an AI-generated image of a uniformed alligator receiving a plaque engraved with the name “Al E. Gator” and the title “Deputy of the Year.”

The department also delivered a public-service reminder worthy of the entire wild encounter: Do not drive impaired, do not run from deputies and definitely do not hide in a Louisiana swamp.

Wildlife may just be cooperating with law enforcement.
