A surprise raccoon encounter at Citi Field gave Mets fans an unexpected sideshow during the August 19 game against the Padres.

Get some whimsy in today’s Present Day Developments: Citi Field apparently has a tiny furry season-ticket holder, and this one came prepared to work the concessions.

During the New York Mets’ August 19 game against the San Diego Padres, fans spotted a raccoon reaching one very determined little paw through a hole underneath the stands. Its target? Peanut shells and whatever other ballpark treasures had landed on the concrete.

Scott Reynolds, who recorded the moment, told Storyful that he and his family had been eating peanuts and dropping the shells on the ground when the mystery paw suddenly appeared. At first, they were not quite sure what was reaching up from below. Then came the tiny fingers, the grabby technique and the realization: oh, that is absolutely a raccoon.

The animal kept reaching through the opening, delicately scooping up whatever it could reach while the humans above watched the snack operation unfold. Eventually, the fans escalated matters by sending a hot dog down through the opening as well.

So yes, somewhere beneath the Citi Field stands was a raccoon apparently enjoying a full New York baseball experience without paying stadium prices. Honestly, it may have had the best seat in the house.

Citi Field Has a Surprisingly Deep Raccoon Lore

And here is where the story gets even better: this is hardly Citi Field’s first raccoon incident. We are not saying it is the same raccoon — nobody needs us launching a 10-year Trash Panda cinematic universe without evidence — but the Mets’ ballpark has accumulated a genuinely funny history with the animals.

Back in 2015, Mets players discovered a baby raccoon inside the clubhouse weight room. The animal was captured and later released into the wild, while pitcher Bobby Parnell joked about the fact that the team apparently had a cage conveniently available.

Then in May 2025, another raccoon became an actual in-game attraction when television cameras caught it wandering through the Citi Field seats during a Mets-Pirates game. FanGraphs later reported that the animal had first been hanging around the batter’s-eye area and repeatedly bothering an SNY camera operator before eventually making its grand tour of the stands.

And of course no Mets animal story would be complete without the legendary 2021 rat-versus-raccoon debate, when Francisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil explained an apparent tunnel dispute by insisting they had been arguing over whether the creature they saw was a rat, raccoon or possibly a possum. New York baseball: occasionally about baseball.

All of which makes the August 2026 peanut bandit feel less like a random intruder and more like the latest employee reporting for the night shift.

One Tiny Reality Check Before We Crown the Rally Raccoon

The video is adorable. Feeding wild raccoons, however, is not something New York City wildlife officials recommend. NYC’s WildlifeNYC guidance says raccoons should be enjoyed from a distance and not deliberately fed, since easy access to human food can encourage nuisance behavior and bring wildlife into closer contact with people.

So maybe keep the peanuts on your side of the concrete next time. We can admire thee furry little Mets watcher without personally expanding the Citi Field catering package.

Still, this creature understood the assignment: arrive late, find the snacks, surprise the people in the expensive seats and leave everybody talking about you the next day. That is star behavior.
