Written by James Graham and adapted from his acclaimed stage play, the film drops us into 1969, when Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch acquired a struggling The Sun and handed editor Larry Lamb an audacious assignment: remake the paper, catch its mighty rival The Daily Mirror and give readers what they wanted — whether polite society approved or not.

O’Connell plays Larry Lamb, the editor tasked with building a newspaper that could punch above its weight, while Pearce steps into the shoes of Rupert Murdoch. Claire Foy joins them as Jules Davies as the newsroom begins tearing through old rules in pursuit of circulation, attention and a new kind of mass-market journalism.
The setup is pure Boyle territory: ambition, velocity, questionable decisions and people charging forward like somebody removed the brakes. But underneath all that glorious newspaper-floor frenzy sits a much bigger question about what happens when giving an audience exactly what it craves becomes the business model.
That history lands with a little extra electricity in 2026. Long before social feeds, algorithms and clickbait became everyday vocabulary, Murdoch and Lamb were testing how far personality, provocation and spectacle could push a newspaper. INK goes back to the moment that formula was being assembled in real time.
The film made its world premiere on September 2, 2026, opening the 83rd Venice International Film Festival in competition. Boyle directs from Graham’s screenplay, with a 116-minute runtime and a production team that includes STUDIOCANAL, House Productions and Media Res.
For U.S. audiences, INK opens in select theaters December 11, 2026, before arriving on Netflix January 8, 2027. And judging by this first look, Boyle has not come to quietly file a historical report. He has come to throw us directly onto the newsroom floor while the presses are still hot.
