Fontaines D.C. Enter a Darker New Chapter With “Marianne”
The current kings of alt-rock are officially moving into their next chapter. Fontaines D.C. have unleashed “Marianne,” the first single from their newly announced fifth studio album, Dopamine Chamber.
Due October 16 via XL Recordings, the album follows 2024’s Romance and finds the Dublin five-piece pushing even further into the strange space where post-punk, psychedelia, pop instinct and futuristic unease all start bleeding into one another.

Frontman Grian Chatten has described the new record as a kind of testing chamber for mood-altering music — and compared with Romance, this one sounds like it is deliberately letting more of the machinery take over. Where the last album still held onto some sense of hope, Chatten says Dopamine Chamber was built to stare more directly at the ugliness.
“Marianne” is a fitting first transmission. The song deals in escapism and dread, wrapped in a widescreen arrangement that feels lush one second and quietly threatening the next. It also carries an emotional history inside the band: bassist Conor Deegan revealed that the track nearly stayed unreleased until their late manager, Trevor Dietz, strongly encouraged them not to leave it behind.
The accompanying video, directed by Dave Meyers, goes even further into the surreal. Bodies distort, scale stops making sense and Chatten appears in places a human being very much should not be appearing. It is grotesque, cinematic and oddly elegant — basically exactly the kind of visual reset you want when a band is announcing a whole new album cycle.
Fontaines D.C. have spent the last decade turning old musical ghosts into something recognizably their own. “Marianne” feels like the next mutation: still connected to the tension and romantic decay that made Romance hit so hard, but colder, stranger and more willing to let the future look a little ugly.
If this is the doorway into Dopamine Chamber, then yeah — we’re walking in.
