Quick‑thinking Inland Empire first responders revive four cats pulled from a burning senior apartment complex.

Present‑day developments: After a fire tore through an apartment in Jurupa Valley last week, Inland Empire first responders rushed into action — and ended up saving the lives of four cats who had been trapped inside the smoke‑filled unit.
According to the firefighters, the call was unlike anything they’d handled before. Nearly 50 felines lived in the senior apartment complex, and four were unaccounted for when crews arrived. Engineer Roy from Cal Fire Riverside went back into the charred building, searching room by room until he spotted the first cat under a bed — limp and unresponsive.
Inside the apartment, three cats were completely lifeless, not breathing and suffering from severe smoke inhalation. With no time to spare, Roy immediately began mouth‑to‑snout resuscitation and chest compressions.

That’s when Deputy Adam Maldonado sprinted in to help — and honestly, he can rescue us from a fire anytime. A proud cat dad himself, he knew exactly how fast their tiny hearts beat. “I knew to beat pretty deep and pretty fast,” he said, as he jumped in to perform chest compressions on one of the unresponsive cats.
Through compressions, mouth‑to‑snout breaths, and oxygen support, the cats slowly began to revive. One firefighter recalled watching a cat named Princess begin panting again — the moment they knew she was coming back. All four cats survived thanks to the persistence, compassion, and quick action of these Inland Empire heroes.
