Coyotes Finding Home Refuge In Abandoned West Hollywood Construction Spot

Coyotes have turned an unfinished West Hollywood condominium complex into an unlikely urban den, with neighbors reporting as many as six animals lounging on upper floors and roaming nearby streets. The city says it’s monitoring the site and urges residents to avoid feeding coyotes, secure pets and trash, and use humane hazing if needed.

That’s right: a pack of fuzzy, street-smart coyotes has apparently claimed an unfinished West Hollywood condominium complex as its own open-air residence. Humans abandoned the construction site. Nature reviewed the vacancy and moved right in.

The animals have been repeatedly spotted inside the skeletal development near Romaine Street and North Spaulding Avenue, lounging on upper floors, watching the neighborhood below and roaming the surrounding streets after dark.

Nearby residents told CBS Los Angeles that they believe as many as six coyotes may be using the massive structure. Some have seen the pack gathered near parked cars, while others regularly spot the animals sunning themselves on the building’s second and third floors.

In other words, the unfinished condo has balconies, multiple levels and a better wildlife view than half the rentals in Los Angeles. No security deposit. No HOA. Absolutely no interest in your pet policy.

The Coyotes Have Become A Daily Neighborhood Presence

Locals said they first began noticing the animals around the start of 2026. The sightings have since become far more frequent, with coyotes appearing on sidewalks, in driveways and around the stalled construction project almost daily.

The spectacle has inspired nicknames including the “Coyote Condo” and the “West Hollywood Zoo,” but the novelty comes with a genuine safety concern. Some residents now avoid walking their dogs near the property, especially at night.

It is their right of humble abode in the sense that coyotes belong in Southern California—but an active den beside homes, pets and heavy traffic is not ideal for anyone involved. The safest outcome protects the animals without allowing them to become increasingly comfortable around people.

Why West Hollywood Is Seeing More Coyotes

The City of West Hollywood reported an increase in coyote sightings across the city at the start of 2026. Urban neighborhoods can offer coyotes rodents, unsecured trash, pet food, fallen fruit, water and places to shelter with relatively few natural threats.

California wildlife officials have also linked broader increases across Los Angeles County to warmer weather and habitat destroyed during the 2025 Eaton and Palisades fires. The abandoned structure may simply be providing this particular pack with the safest available refuge near reliable food sources.

The city says it is aware of the animals at the construction site. West Hollywood’s Coyote Management and Coexistence Plan prioritizes education, prevention, humane hazing and non-lethal management while working with Los Angeles County agencies to monitor activity.

How Residents Can Safely Share The Neighborhood

Residents should never feed coyotes, intentionally or accidentally. Pet food and water should not be left outside, trash and compost should remain secured, fallen fruit should be collected and small pets should be closely supervised—particularly from dusk through dawn.

If a coyote approaches and does not immediately retreat, the city recommends humane hazing: stand tall, make yourself look larger, maintain eye contact, shout, clap or use a noisemaker while giving the animal a clear route away. Do not run, corner it or attempt to get closer for a photograph.

For now, the unfinished development remains a reminder that Los Angeles is never entirely separate from the wild landscape around it. It is a coyote’s world after all—and apparently we are only living near their unfinished luxury condo.
