Chaka Khan Turns Inward Without Turning Down the Fire
How much of yourself is there left to discover? That is the question hanging over Chaka Khan’s latest stop at A COLORS SHOW, where the living legend steps into the platform’s stripped-back performance world with a brand-sparkling-new song called “Curious Subject.”
And Missus Khan is not showing up just to remind everybody that the voice still does exactly what it needs to do. “Curious Subject” is part of her forthcoming album CHAKZILLA, due September 18, 2026, and the song lands right in the middle of a new era that sounds interested in both looking back and asking what might still be waiting around the corner.

The COLORS format is almost comically well suited to Khan. There is nowhere for a performer to hide behind giant production, endless camera tricks or a stage full of distractions. The whole idea is space, voice, personality and one unmistakable visual world — which means charisma has to do the heavy lifting. Fortunately, charisma has never exactly been a shortage around here.
“Curious Subject” sits as track three on the 10-song CHAKZILLA. The album is produced by Greg Kurstin and co-written with Sia, with Snoop Dogg appearing on “Boogie’s in My Soul” and Lenny Kravitz joining Khan on “Bring the Party.” It marks her first batch of new music in more than seven years, following 2019’s Hello Happiness.
The new project has already been introducing itself in pieces. Khan opened the era with the title track “Chakzilla,” followed by “Boogie’s in My Soul” with Snoop Dogg. “Curious Subject” shifts the temperature again, giving the album another angle before the full record arrives next month.
What makes this chapter particularly fun is that Khan has absolutely nothing left to prove. We are talking about the voice behind “I’m Every Woman,” “I Feel for You,” “Through the Fire,” Rufus classics and enough vocal influence to populate several generations of singers. Yet the new material is not being presented like a museum tour. She is still curious. Still moving. Still asking questions.
That makes “Curious Subject” feel like a fitting title before you even get to the song itself. There is something delicious about an artist with more than five decades of history arriving at a performance built around the idea that self-discovery might not have an expiration date.

With CHAKZILLA still waiting in the wings, this performance works like a clean little temperature check on what Khan is building: classic command without trying to cosplay the past. The machinery has been stripped away, the song gets the room, and the legend gets to simply stand there and be Chaka Khan.
