Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman Still Have That Owens-Sister Spark

The mighty twosome that is Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman has officially hit the Practical Magic 2 promo trail together — and their latest stop on BBC’s The One Show came with laughing, banter, affection and enough barely-contained chaos to remind us exactly why Sally and Gillian Owens worked so beautifully in the first place.
Bullock and Kidman joined hosts Lauren Laverne and Angellica Bell on the famous green sofa following the film’s London premiere, talking about stepping back into the Owens family nearly three decades after the original Practical Magic became a cult favorite.

Kidman spoke about the pleasure of slipping back into Gillian Owens, a character whose freewheeling, whimsical energy gives her room to play in a way many of her more dramatic roles do not. Bullock immediately jumped in to say that, from her perspective, that looseness is not exactly acting.
“That’s how I see her in real life,” Bullock said of Kidman, praising her co-star for being incredibly free and brave enough to do things Bullock herself might happily avoid from the safety of home.

Then came the moment that sent the sofa sideways. After the conversation turned to Kidman’s playful habit of “pantsing” Bullock, Kidman declared there was only one person who would let her get away with it — Sandra. Bullock, already cracking herself up, made it very clear that she has learned to prepare accordingly whenever Nicole enters the room.
It is exactly the sort of loose, slightly unhinged chemistry that cannot be manufactured by a studio press schedule. Bullock and Kidman first played sisters Sally and Gillian Owens in the 1998 original, and their off-screen ease still reads like two people who know exactly how far they can push one another before somebody loses it.

The sequel brings Bullock and Kidman back alongside returning Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, with Joey King and Maisie Williams joining the next generation of the Owens family. Directed by Susanne Bier, the film returns to the witches, curses and sisterhood that gave the original its staying power while moving the family story forward.
Both Bullock and Kidman are also producers this time around, making the reunion more than a nostalgia cameo. Practical Magic 2 arrives in theaters in September — but judging by this interview, the Owens sisters apparently started the spell work long before opening weekend.
