Nearly 30 Years Later, Their Friendship Feels Bigger Than the Movie
The witches of Practical Magic 2, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, are officially aboard thee non-stop promo choo-choo train — but this stop feels a little different.
The longtime friends sit down with PEOPLE nearly 30 years after the original Practical Magic first brought them together onscreen as Gillian and Sally Owens. Instead of simply selling the sequel, the two women get candid about friendship, motherhood, loss, getting older and who they have become since 1998.
And that passage of time is really the heart of the conversation. Both have lived entire lives since audiences first met the Owens sisters — raising families, navigating enormous careers, enduring profound personal losses and learning what actually matters when the noise around all of it fades.
That is also part of why returning to Practical Magic now made sense to them. Speaking with PEOPLE, Bullock and Kidman reflected on how the sequel digs deeper into family legacy, the lives and desires of women across generations, and the patterns families inherit — or finally decide to break.
The chemistry between them is still delightfully easy. They tease each other, finish thoughts, look back on the quiet conversations they shared while making the first film and speak with the kind of affection that cannot really be manufactured for a press tour.
Kidman describes those quiet moments between them as some of her most treasured memories, while Bullock makes clear that the friendship became much more than two actresses who happened to make a beloved movie together. Nearly three decades later, they are still showing up for one another.
Which makes the return of Sally and Gillian feel strangely perfect. Practical Magic was always about sisterhood underneath all thee spells, curses and midnight margaritas. Now the women playing those sisters bring almost 30 more years of actual life into the room with them.
