Popstar follows a run that has kept Tinashe firmly in her own lane while still widening the audience around her — from “Nasty” to “No Broke Boys,” “Too Easy,” “Crash Out” and “Melatonin.” The title itself fits where she is now: independent-minded, self-directed and fully aware of the bigger pop machine without letting it dictate the shape of the work.
And it sounds like she is ready to perform this chapter as a chapter. When a fan asks whether the older “Something Like a Heartbreak” will make the set list, Tinashe does not reach backward for an easy nostalgia promise. She steers the room right back to Popstar.
“Let’s focus on the current songs. They will be on the set list.”
Her answer on the older song? “Probably not.” Translation: the coming live era is being built around the music she is making now. For an artist with a catalog deep enough to coast on fan favorites, that insistence matters. She is asking the audience to meet her in the present instead of treating the new album like an intermission between old hits.

The album has no guest features — “She’s feature-free,” as Tinashe puts it — and includes interludes. She says the project began around two years ago and grew out of what she initially thought would continue her recent trilogy. As the songs took shape, however, they began to feel like “their own universe.”
That universe is deliberately wide. Asked how she keeps an album moving through different genres without losing cohesion, Tinashe points to her vocal production, harmonies, stacked layers and lyricism as the connective tissue. When another fan asks for the dominant genre, she gives the most Tinashe answer possible: pop is the umbrella, and the record lives beneath all of it.
She also lets a little of the process out. One song began with dreamy piano loops and a tougher bass line made alongside Ricky; she shelved the instrumental when the idea would not come, returned months later and wrote the words in one rush. The closing track, meanwhile, is described as personal and “very classic Nasha.” She refuses to give away much more, reminding fans that they have already heard about five songs while ten tracks remain waiting for release day.
And yes, this is one for the collectors too. The “Hollywood Dreams” version gives fans something beyond the standard pressing — an alternate LP cover plus that signed insert — while the Q&A gives Tinashe room to talk through the era in real time instead of reducing it to another pre-order page. She says she spent days — then corrects herself to weeks — signing the CDs and vinyl, running through box after box of metallic markers along the way. Those autographs did not magically appear.

So before September 25 gets here, settle in with the replay and hear directly from Tinashe about the album, the signed release and the live era she is building around Popstar. She is not asking fans to live in the rearview mirror. The current songs are the point.
