Maurice White was an American singer, songwriter, drummer, producer and visionary founder of Earth, Wind & Fire. Born in Memphis and professionally developed in Chicago, he worked as a Chess Records session drummer and member of the Ramsey Lewis Trio before creating Earth, Wind & Fire in Los Angeles. White shaped the group’s expansive blend of funk, soul, jazz, pop and African-influenced spirituality while singing, writing and producing many of its defining records. He also released the 1985 solo album Maurice White, featuring his R&B hit cover of “Stand by Me.”
