George Michael’s Faith era is heading to the big screen, and the first official trailer for George Michael: The Faith Tour has arrived.

The concert film is built from recently rediscovered, never-before-seen footage captured during Michael’s 1988 performances at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris — when he was just 24 and in the middle of the first solo tour of his career.

This is not a modern recreation or a talking-head retrospective stitched around a few old clips. The backbone is the show itself: footage captured on 35mm film with 14 cameras over two nights, restored and remastered for cinemas.

The Faith Tour footage sat unseen for nearly four decades

The footage comes from the European leg of the Faith Tour, the massive run that followed Michael’s 1987 solo debut album and helped cement the separation between the Wham! superstar the world already knew and the solo artist he was becoming.

The tour ultimately stretched beyond 100 shows across 16 countries. The Paris performances were professionally filmed, but the material was never turned into a theatrical concert film at the time.

Now, almost four decades later, those reels have become the center of a new 1-hour-53-minute cinema event directed by longtime George Michael collaborators Andy Morahan and David Austin.

There is more here than restored concert footage

The feature will open with an original short film by Mary McCartney, using newly discovered audio and imagery from 1986 through 1988 to create what the filmmakers describe as a Faith-era time capsule.

The larger presentation also includes an unheard George Michael interview, previously unseen Herb Ritts photographs and behind-the-scenes material from the making of the “Faith” music video.

And because apparently bringing George Michael back to a cinema screen was not enough, the film is also being accompanied by an 18-track live album drawn from previously unreleased performances.

When does George Michael: The Faith Tour hit cinemas?
