Five Voices, One Stage, and a Pop-Culture Event That Still Feels Unreal

Today’s Woman Crush Wednesday is not one woman. It is a full vocal emergency.
We are talking about the truly once-in-a-lifetime spectacle that was VH1 Divas Live 1998, starring Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan, Aretha Franklin, Céline Dion and Shania Twain — five women with enough voice, catalog and star power to make the phrase “stacked lineup” feel wildly inadequate.

Before the word diva became a marketing department, VH1 put the real thing on one stage. Revisit the music and take some of that 1998 vocal excess home.

The landmark made-for-TV concert aired live on April 14, 1998 from the famed Beacon Theatre in New York City as a benefit for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, which supported music education programs in public schools.
And the set list? Unreasonable. Mariah opened with “My All” and “Make It Happen.” Gloria came through with “Turn the Beat Around,” “Heaven’s What I Feel” and a full hit-packed megamix. Shania delivered “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and “You’re Still the One.” Céline brought “River Deep, Mountain High,” “The Reason” with Carole King and, because 1998 was 1998, “My Heart Will Go On.”

Then came one of the night’s great pieces of television history: Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey sharing “Chain of Fools.” Mariah was the only one of the featured divas to duet directly with Aretha during the show, and yes, the generational handoff energy of that moment still hits.
Carole King also joined the event, helping guide the ensemble through “You’ve Got a Friend” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” The finale then brought the women together for “A Natural Woman” and “Testimony.”
What makes the first Divas Live so special now is not just the nostalgia. It is the fact that VH1 could put five women from very different corners of pop, soul and country on the same stage and trust that the voices themselves were the event. No stunt premise needed. No manufactured rivalry required. Just songs, gowns, giant notes and enough personality to power Manhattan.
The concert proved successful enough that VH1 turned Divas into a recurring franchise, and the original show was released on CD and home video on October 6, 1998.

Twenty-eight years later, the whole thing still feels faintly impossible. Mariah. Céline. Aretha. Gloria. Shania. Carole King casually dropping by. Everybody singing live. Everybody with an actual point of view.
This was not merely “diva” branding. This was thee syllabus.
