A Salmonella Alert Leads a Night of Explosive National Headlines
NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas opened its August 5, 2026 broadcast with a widening salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeño peppers, before moving through a security arrest at President Donald Trump’s California golf club, a deadly Illinois home explosion and a closely watched Michigan Senate primary result.
Federal health officials reported 345 illnesses across 27 states and 36 hospitalizations in the salmonella outbreak. Investigators linked the cases to jalapeños grown in Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed to restaurants by Coast Citrus Distributors.
Chipotle replaced affected jalapeños with peppers from different growers, while QDOBA stopped serving the implicated product. The FDA said the restaurants were not considered an ongoing risk after those steps were taken, but the wider investigation and recall remained active.

Arrest at Trump’s California Golf Club Raises Security Questions
The broadcast also covered the arrest of a 38-year-old man at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Authorities said he falsely presented himself as part of a government security detail and was carrying a loaded handgun, ammunition and a fake badge.
A later search of his home uncovered additional firearms, body armor and an unregistered short-barreled rifle, according to federal authorities. He now faces federal weapons charges alongside separate state charges.
The case immediately became more than an unusual trespassing arrest because of the location, the false security claim and the weapons investigators said they recovered afterward.
Illinois Home Explosion Leaves Investigators With a Fatal Mystery
Authorities in Illinois were meanwhile investigating a home explosion captured on video that reduced the structure to its foundation and killed one man. The footage shows the house disappearing in an instant as the blast sends debris outward.
The episode did not present a confirmed cause, making the visual evidence more immediate than the explanation. Investigators were still working to determine what triggered the blast and whether utilities, equipment or another source played a role.
Abdul El-Sayed’s Michigan Win Reshapes a Major Senate Contest
The broadcast also followed Abdul El-Sayed’s narrow victory over Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary. El-Sayed, a physician and former Detroit public-health official, overcame heavy establishment opposition to secure the nomination.
He now moves into a general-election contest against Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers. The race is expected to help determine control of the Senate and will test whether El-Sayed’s progressive campaign can hold together a divided Democratic coalition in a battleground state.
