Midair Terror, Cornell Questions and One Heartwarming Football Surprise

NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas opened its September 30 broadcast with a terrifying attack aboard a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv, before turning to new questions surrounding Cornell University’s handling of a 2024 sexual-assault allegation. And because Nightly News knows when viewers need a change of temperature, the broadcast closed on a Georgia football field with one very emotional surprise.

Passengers Stop Alleged Attempt to Crash Flydubai Flight
The night’s lead story centered on a Flydubai flight headed for Tel Aviv, where passengers reportedly rushed toward the cockpit after the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the pilot and attempted to crash the plane. NBC News reported that passengers ultimately subdued the attacker as the aircraft dropped thousands of feet before making an emergency landing.

Correspondents Matt Bradley and Tom Costello reported on the passengers who intervened and the investigation now focused on airline security — including the major question of how a potentially forbidden weapon reportedly made it through airport screening and into the cockpit.
Cornell Brings in Outside Counsel as 2024 Case Faces New Scrutiny
The broadcast then returned to Cornell University, where New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she had spoken with the university’s president and that outside counsel would be brought in to review the school’s handling of a 2024 sexual-assault allegation.

NBC News also obtained the six-page statement the female student gave to Cornell police in 2024, adding new detail to a case that has already drawn renewed scrutiny over both the allegation itself and the university’s response.
Good News Tonight: Georgia Football Team Rallies Around Alex Henson
The tone changed completely for “Good News Tonight.” Georgia mom Alex Henson, who is fighting cancer, arrived at a local high school football game and was surprised when every player presented her with a flower and a hug.

Henson, a mother of two, said the gesture made her feel “so much love.” After a broadcast led by an aviation emergency and difficult questions surrounding Cornell, it was the kind of final story designed to send viewers out on a much softer note.
