Gunfire at MIA and a Disturbing United Flight Headline the Night
NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas packed its September 23 broadcast with breaking airport chaos, a disturbing passenger account, severe-weather threats and a night of fast-moving headlines.
Tonight’s broadcasting chaos starts at Miami International Airport, where shots were fired and a massive law-enforcement response followed. NBC 6’s Victoria De Cardenas reported live from the airport as investigators worked the scene. At airtime, one person was in custody, no injuries had been reported and the airport was operating, though travelers were warned to expect delays.

Shots Fired at Miami International Airport Trigger a Massive Response
De Cardenas said the gunfire was reported at around 4 p.m., with witnesses describing people ducking behind cars as law enforcement moved in and several terminal entrances were temporarily shut down. By the time the broadcast went live, authorities said there was no ongoing reported injury count and the airport had returned to operation.
NBC 6 later reported that Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputies arrested 31-year-old Francisco Ivan Mendiola. Detectives said four rounds were fired — three toward the occupied terminal, striking a trash can, and another striking an unoccupied vehicle. No injuries were reported.
United Passenger Says She Was Sent Back Beside a Man Committing a Lewd Act
Then a passenger shares a disturbing account from a United Airlines flight. A 25-year-old woman told NBC News that the man sitting next to her was masturbating during a one-hour flight over Labor Day weekend. She said she left her seat and alerted flight attendants, but was told to return to the seat for landing because the flight was full.
The woman said the man was later allowed to leave the plane without being confronted and that United eventually offered her a $100 flight credit. United told NBC News that safety is its top priority, said it takes the matter seriously and is looking into what happened, and apologized to the customer for her experience.

The full episode opens with President Donald Trump welcoming Chinese President Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews ahead of talks expected to include artificial intelligence, trade and Taiwan. NBC also covers the First Amendment court fight over White House access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico; a West Bank car-ramming attack that seriously injured the son of Israel’s ambassador to the U.S.; a developing nor’easter and another hurricane threat near Hawaii; and a Royal Air Force training jet crash in the U.K. in which both pilots ejected.
