NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas opened its September 22 broadcast with a major cybersecurity claim: the cybercrime group ShinyHunters said it had breached FBI systems and obtained sensitive information tied to current and former employees and job applicants.

The FBI said it was investigating claims of unauthorized activity affecting FBIjobs.gov. Reuters was able to match some of the allegedly stolen personnel information to real people, but it could not establish where the data came from or independently confirm that it had been taken from the FBI’s internal systems. That distinction remains important as the scope of the incident is still being investigated.

U.S.-Iran Talks Follow Trump’s Warning at the United Nations

The broadcast also covered President Donald Trump’s address to the United Nations, where he said he was weighing whether to reach a deal with Iran or “annihilate” the Islamic Republic. Later that day, Trump said U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had taken part in talks involving Iranian officials on the sidelines of the General Assembly.

Accounts differed on exactly how direct those talks were. U.S. officials described a meeting with Iranian representatives, while other reporting said mediators shuttled between the sides. Either way, the contact marked a notable diplomatic development amid the continuing conflict.

Hayden Panettiere’s Death Ruled an Accidental Drug Overdose

NBC also reported new details in the death of actress Hayden Panettiere. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office ruled her death accidental and attributed it to the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. Panettiere died in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16 at age 36.

New X2 Lawsuits Put Six Flags Magic Mountain Under Scrutiny

Another major segment focused on Six Flags Magic Mountain’s X2 roller coaster in Valencia, California. Three new lawsuits allege riders suffered severe brain injuries after riding X2, while attorneys for the plaintiffs say more than 100 additional people have reported possible brain injuries connected to the attraction.

The claims remain allegations being litigated. Six Flags shut X2 in July amid a state investigation, and prior court filings have included disputes over whether the ride could produce forces capable of causing the injuries alleged by riders.

Good News Tonight: A 93rd Birthday Surprise in Kansas City

The broadcast closed on a much lighter note. Kansas City kindergarteners and teachers surprised Eileen McKeon, a 93-year-old classroom volunteer who reads to the children several times a month, with a birthday celebration that moved her to tears.
