Lewis joined Whoopi Goldberg and the daytime panel to spill on Netflix’s upcoming A Different World sequel series, which brings her back as the wise, ambitious and eternally beloved Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor.

She also steps into considerably darker territory through the Netflix crime drama Nemesis, allowing audiences who grew up with her sitcom work to see another side of her expansive career.

Plus, Lewis and Whoopi reminisce about a friendship that has stretched across decades of entertainment history.

Hillman is calling, crime drama is keeping her busy and Whoopi already knows where several of the stories are buried.

Dawnn Lewis heads back to Hillman as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor.

Lewis originated Jaleesa when A Different World premiered in 1987, giving the fictional Hillman College one of its most grounded and mature students.

Jaleesa arrived on campus as a divorced woman returning to school and quickly became a steadying force among younger classmates still attempting to understand adulthood.

Lewis also co-wrote the original theme song, meaning her fingerprints were present both inside the episodes and across the opening moments that introduced Hillman every week.

For the new Netflix series, she reprises Jaleesa alongside Glynn Turman as Colonel Bradford Taylor, reconnecting viewers with the couple decades after the original sitcom ended.

Some alumni return for homecoming. Jaleesa apparently returned with an entire television contract.

A Different World welcomes a new freshman class September 24.

The sequel centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon.

Deborah is the youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, once again played by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy.

She arrives at Hillman determined to create her own identity, even as the reputations of her famous alumni parents follow her across campus.

The ten-episode season introduces a new generation of students while bringing back original favorites including Lewis, Turman, Cree Summer, Darryl M. Bell, Charnele Brown, Jenifer Lewis, Jada Pinkett Smith, Karen Malina White and Ajai Sanders.

Dawnn Lewis talks returning to Hillman on The View.

Lewis shares her excitement over returning as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor and helping welcome a new generation of students into the world of Hillman College.

The dorm rooms may have Wi-Fi now, but Hillman drama clearly remains part of the required curriculum.

Nemesis gives Dawnn Lewis room to turn up the drama.

Lewis’ current Netflix run also includes Nemesis, the Los Angeles crime thriller created by Courtney A. Kemp and Tani Marole.

The series follows LAPD detective Isaiah Stiles as he becomes consumed by his pursuit of criminal mastermind Coltrane Wilder.

The rivalry pulls spouses, children, relatives and criminal associates into an increasingly dangerous conflict where family loyalty can become either protection or another liability.

Lewis joins a deep ensemble that also includes Matthew Law, Y’lan Noel, Cleopatra Coleman, Gabrielle Dennis, Michael Potts, Sophina Brown and William Allen Young.

Her appearance gives longtime comedy viewers a reminder that Lewis has never belonged inside one genre, moving just as comfortably through dramatic television, voice acting, stage performance and music.

Jaleesa could manage Hillman students. A tense Netflix crime family should consider itself properly warned.

Dawnn Lewis and Whoopi Goldberg share decades of history.

The visit also becomes a reunion between Lewis and Goldberg, whose friendship reaches back through decades of shared entertainment circles and personal milestones.

Their histories even intersect through A Different World. Goldberg guest-starred as Dr. Jordan in the landmark 1991 episode If I Should Die Before I Wake.

The episode followed Hillman students confronting their fear and misinformation after a classmate revealed that she was living with HIV.

Goldberg’s involvement helped the network series take on a subject many advertisers and television executives still considered untouchable, creating one of the show’s most remembered episodes.

More than three decades later, Lewis and Goldberg can look across The View table at careers that continued expanding far beyond the roles that first connected them with audiences.

Old friends, a new crime drama and another semester at Hillman. Miss Dawnn arrived with a complete syllabus.
