Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett Enter a Twisted Literary Nightmare

That stare? Still unsettling. A new trailer for Verity has arrived, bringing Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett into the increasingly twisted world of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling psychological thriller. And the Crawford estate is looking like a spectacularly bad place to accept a freelance writing gig.
Dakota Johnson stars as Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who relocates to the remote Crawford estate after being hired to ghostwrite the unfinished book series of bestselling author Verity Crawford, played by Anne Hathaway. Verity is unable to complete the series following an accident, while her husband Jeremy Crawford, played by Josh Hartnett, brings Lowen into the increasingly uncomfortable assignment.
A Ghostwriting Job With One Seriously Twisted Manuscript
Things go properly sideways when Lowen discovers what appears to be Verity’s autobiographical writing. The material contains disturbing confessions involving Jeremy, leaving Lowen caught between what might be fiction, what might be truth and exactly how much danger is hiding inside the Crawford family’s carefully arranged world.
The film is directed by Michael Showalter, with scripts credited by Amazon MGM Studios to Nick Antosca and Colleen Hoover. The studio describes the adaptation as a seductive psychological thriller built around manipulation, attraction, obsession and Lowen’s growing inability to separate reality from the story she has been hired to finish.
And yes, Hathaway appears to be having a very good time making silence look threatening. Johnson’s Lowen is walking directly into the kind of assignment where “just finish the books” becomes the least complicated part of the job, while Hartnett’s Jeremy sits right in the middle of the story’s increasingly messy triangle.
Verity opens in U.S. theaters on October 2, 2026.
