Shakira reacts to her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nomination and reflects on her musical beginnings in Barranquilla.
Shakira is spilling her musical heart out, reacting to Billboard in a new press release. The Latin Queen of Pop opened up about what it felt like to first scoop up a guitar as a teen in her hood‑hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia, and how surreal it is to now be recognized by one of music’s most iconic institutions.

“I thought someone was joking with me. I had to double‑check, and then I just felt really grateful,” Shakira told Billboard Español of her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nod. “It’s not something you expect. I’m so over the moon with my fans who’ve been supporting me for 30 years already, and they continue to accompany me and to make things like these that sound almost impossible happen.”

We’ll find out next month in April whether Shakira officially makes the cut, as the Hall prepares to reveal which of the 17 nominees will be inducted. This year’s lineup includes major names like Mariah Carey and Oasis, making Shakira’s nomination even more electric.
No matter the outcome, the Barranquilla powerhouse has already built a legacy that crosses borders, genres, and generations — and this moment only cements it further.
Sound off — is Shakira a lock for the Hall of Fame in your book, or should the voters shake things up?
