The one and only Liza Minnelli is sitting down for a deeply reflective conversation as she approaches a major milestone — her 80th birthday.

And in true Liza fashion, the legendary performer is doing it with equal parts humor, honesty, and a lifetime of stories shaped by Hollywood itself.

The EGOT-winning icon — and only daughter of screen legend Judy Garland — recently spoke with People about growing up surrounded by movie stars, the resilience that carried her through personal hardships, and the lessons she learned from the family that shaped her.

Looking back on turning 80, Minnelli remains candid about life’s realities.

“Well, my health is great… I broke my back and that hurts. Other than that, things are fine.”

For Minnelli, growing up in the golden era of Hollywood felt strangely normal — even when the neighbors happened to be icons.

“Your next-door neighbor is Humphrey Bogart, but it seems normal.”

Despite the glamour surrounding her childhood, Minnelli knew early on exactly where she wanted her life to go.

Broadway.

“The first time I saw Bye-Bye Birdie with kids on stage… they looked like they were having so much fun. I thought, I want to do that too.

Her father — director Vincente Minnelli — played an enormous role in nurturing that dream.

Minnelli recalls dancing endlessly around the house, performing for him whenever he asked.

“He’d say, ‘Will you do me a favor? Dance for me.’ And that’s what I did. That’s how it all started.”

But life in Hollywood royalty wasn’t always easy.

Minnelli also spoke candidly about the complicated relationship she had with her mother, Judy Garland, whose own struggles were well documented.

Still, with time came understanding.

“Everybody has problems with their mother… it ain’t just me.”

That reflection — paired with empathy — is something Minnelli says helped her grow as both a performer and a person.

Through heartbreak, health challenges, and decades in the spotlight, one constant has remained.

Her resilience.

“If I fall down… I go right back in and fight again.”

Even after decades of fame, Minnelli says she still believes in the simple things that carry people through difficult moments.

Music. Friendship. Laughter.

“It’s huge to have friends. Really huge.”

For fans around the world, Minnelli remains one of entertainment’s most enduring figures — a performer who survived the pressures of Hollywood, carved her own artistic path, and continued to shine in her own unmistakable voice.
