Tame Impala Returns with “Loser”

Kevin Parker—our long-standing sonic architect behind Tame Impala—has dropped a new single, and Kidda’s, it’s a moment. “Loser” arrives with a visual feast filmed in the famously haunted, Victorian-lined Carroll Avenue neighborhood of Los Angeles, starring none other than actor-musician Joe Keery. Yes, that Joe Keery. And yes, he delivers.

The track itself? A subtle nod to Beck’s 1994 cult classic “Loser,” with lyrical echoes and tonal gestures that feel intentional without being derivative. Parker flips the phrase—“I’m a loser babe, so rip my heart out”—into something more introspective, more grounded. There’s even a Spanish guitar riff at the top that recalls Beck’s own genre-blending chaos, but here it’s more restrained, more deliberate.

Sonically, “Loser” trades the swirling psychedelia for a tighter, more rounded sound. The drums are crisp, the guitars layered with a warmth that feels analog. It’s less cosmic drift, more emotional precision. And it works.

The single is off Tame Impala’s forthcoming album—details still under wraps—but if this is the tone-setter, we’re in for a record that leans into clarity without losing Parker’s signature introspection.

Directed by Sam Kristofski, with creative direction from Imogene Strauss, the video is a masterclass in mood. Keery’s presence adds a layer of narrative tension that feels lived-in, not performed. It’s the kind of casting that doesn’t just work—it elevates.

We’ve followed Parker’s evolution from Innerspeaker to The Slow Rush, and “Loser” feels like a new chapter. Not a reinvention, but a refinement.

What do you think? Does “Loser” hit the mark or miss the mystique? Drop your thoughts in the comments—especially if you caught any other Beck references or have theories on the album direction. We’re listening.
