Zephyring Nearly 17 Years, Britney’s “3” Still Sounds Dangerously Poptastic

Zephyring nearly 17 years, Britney Spears unleashed “3” in 2009 as the brand-new pop jolt attached to her second greatest-hits set, The Singles Collection. And thee eargasmic thing still does exactly what a Britney single is supposed to do: arrive fast, flirt shamelessly and leave before anybody has time to overthink it.

One correction to the anniversary timeline: “3” was sent to radio on September 29, 2009, with its digital release following in early October. October 6 falls instead during the Los Angeles shoot for the song’s music video. Jive Records had announced the track as the new song launching The Singles Collection, celebrating Britney’s first decade in pop.

Britney reunited with Max Martin for the track, with Martin and Shellback producing and co-writing alongside Tiffany Amber. The result is pure late-2000s electropop machinery: a clipped synth pulse, a heavy bassline and one of those choruses built to lodge itself in your brain before the first spin is even over.

Then “3” Did the Very Britney Thing and Debuted at No. 1

When “3” hit the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1, it became Britney’s third chart-topper in the U.S. and the first single by any artist in more than three years to debut directly in the top spot. It was also the first non-American Idol single in nearly 11 years to pull off that kind of entrance.

So no, the song did not need months of setup or some giant traditional campaign to announce itself. One new Britney track, one absurdly sticky hook and straight to the penthouse. Very on brand.

A Three-Minute Pop Wink With Absolutely No Interest in Subtlety

Lyrically, “3” never pretends its counting lesson is about mathematics. The Peter, Paul and Mary reference, the playground-chant chorus and all that triple-fun business make the joke perfectly clear. Britney delivers it with exactly the right amount of detachment — not overselling the wink because the production is already doing plenty.

That economy is part of why the record still works. There is no giant bridge trying to become a vocal showcase and no unnecessary fourth minute. The song clocks in, does its damage and disappears. Max Martin understood thee assignment before anybody started saying people understood assignments.

Diane Martel Kept the Video Sleek, Minimal and Very Britney

The music video was directed by Diane Martel and filmed in Los Angeles in early October 2009, with choreography by Tone & Rich. Rather than burying Britney under a complicated storyline, Martel kept the setup stripped down: graphic black-and-white spaces, dancers, movement and Britney working the camera.

The official video premiered later that month, while a director’s cut surfaced in December with alternate edits and additional footage. The simpler concept aged in its favor. It lets the song’s pace and Britney’s performance carry everything instead of trapping the video inside some elaborate 2009 gimmick.

Nearly 17 years later, “3” remains one of Britney’s cleanest little pop missiles: unserious in exactly the right way, ridiculously efficient and still capable of turning any room into a 2009 dance floor. Zephyring indeed.
