Today’s “Wednesday Whimsy” belongs to Norway’s World Cup fans, who turned a Boston escalator into a full-on “Viking Row” before their nation’s first FIFA World Cup match in 28 years.

Dig out the excited fans rowing their way up an escalator like a moving Viking longship, chanting and pulling imaginary oars as they headed toward Norway’s long-awaited return to the World Cup stage.

Norway’s opening match against Iraq in Boston marked the national team’s first World Cup appearance since 1998, and the supporters clearly arrived with 28 years of stored-up matchday energy.

Some fans take the train. Norway fans apparently launch a ship indoors.

The Viking Row Takes Over Boston

The moment happened at Boston’s South Station, where Norwegian supporters, many wrapped in flags and matchday gear, used the escalator like a traveling stage. Instead of simply riding up, they sat into the movement and rowed together in sync.

The “Viking Row” has become one of the most charming fan rituals of this World Cup moment. It borrows from Norway’s Viking imagery and turns crowd energy into a synchronized rowing chant that looks both extremely serious and completely unserious at the same time.

Is an escalator the safest place to recreate a longship? We will let the MBTA gods sort that out. Is it funny, oddly beautiful and very Norway? Absolutely.

Twenty-Eight Years of Joy in One Escalator Ride

Norway’s return was already emotional before kickoff. The country had not appeared at a men’s World Cup since 1998, and the Boston opener gave fans a reason to turn the whole city into a traveling celebration.

Then Norway beat Iraq 4-1, with Erling Haaland scoring twice, which means this escalator row was not just pregame chaos. It was prophecy with better core strength.

Wednesday Whimsy approved. May all public transit remain safe, musical and only mildly unhinged.
