Today’s Way Back Wednesday takes you zephyring almost 30 years to May 1998, when Destiny’s Child performed “No, No, No” live on The Dini Petty Show — complete with a full interview from a moment when the group was still introducing itself to a much wider audience.
The appearance came during the group’s early promotional run as they prepared for Canadian dates opening for Boyz II Men. Their self-titled debut album had arrived only months earlier, and “No, No, No” was the record that first pushed Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett into the mainstream conversation.

“No, No, No” was the first signal that Destiny’s Child had arrived
Released as the group’s debut single, “No, No, No” became their first major hit and introduced the vocal blend and attitude that would quickly turn Destiny’s Child into one of the defining R&B groups of their generation.
What makes this appearance so fun now is the timing. They are not looking back on a hit. They are standing right inside the beginning of it.

That original lineup is part of what makes footage from this period such a time capsule. Before the lineup changes, before the stadium-sized catalog and before Beyoncé’s solo empire, there were four young women doing the television rounds, promoting a debut album and trying to make sure people remembered the name Destiny’s Child.
The Dini Petty appearance catches them before the mythology took over
York University’s archive dates the episode to May 12, 1998 and lists both a Destiny’s Child performance and interview among the program’s segments. That places the appearance squarely inside the group’s first major year, when the machinery around Destiny’s Child was still being built in public.
And yes, knowing what came next makes every little moment hit differently. The confidence is already there. The personalities are already separating themselves. The history just has not caught up to them yet.
That same year, Destiny’s Child joined Boyz II Men on multiple dates of the Evolution Tour, including Canadian stops. This little daytime-TV appearance was part of a much larger push that was quickly turning “No, No, No” into their calling card.
