Zara tells Vogue that a lot has changed since she last played Lollapalooza as a teenager. Now 28, she says she feels stronger vocally, has more fun onstage and is much more involved in the songwriting, artistry and construction of the show itself.
And because this is Zara, the glam has its own storyline. Her purple-and-orange makeup look was inspired by a crawfish — yes, an actual crawfish photo pulled up on her makeup artist’s phone — while her tour wardrobe stays firmly in the sparkly, colorful and dance-friendly lane.
She also explains that she does not want every live moment polished into perfection. Zara prefers keeping the backing track lighter and allowing a performance to actually feel live, flaws and all.
From Soundcheck to the Lollapalooza Stage
The Vogue cameras also catch an unexpected bit of festival chaos: weather delays affecting Lil Uzi Vert led to a lineup switch that gave Zara a little extra time for glam — and apparently, a much-needed nap — before showtime.
Then it is all lights, dancers and Midnight Sun energy as she finally steps in front of the packed Chicago crowd.
