Donna Summer’s Estate Just Opened the Vault on “MacArthur Park”
There are few little internet surprises better than opening an artist’s official YouTube channel and discovering that somebody in charge of the vault has decided to feed us.
Today, that somebody is the team behind Donna Summer’s official legacy channels, which has unleashed archival footage of thee Disco Queen performing “MacArthur Park” during Night of the Proms in Belgium back in 2005.
And no, this is not one of those dusty old uploads where you squint through 14 pixels and pretend the audio is fine because history matters. The performance puts Summer where a voice like hers belongs: front and center, backed by the oversized orchestral drama that “MacArthur Park” practically demands.

The clip comes from Summer’s 2005 Night of the Proms appearances at Sportpaleis in Antwerp, where she shared the bill with Roger Daltrey, Ace of Base, Safri Duo and longtime Proms fixture John Miles. The event’s own history remembers Summer turning the arena into one giant dance floor — which sounds exactly correct.
Published setlists from the Antwerp run show just how ruthless her mini-set was: “I Feel Love,” “MacArthur Park,” “Bad Girls,” “Hot Stuff” and “Last Dance,” followed by “State of Independence” in the finale. That is not a setlist. That is a reminder.
“MacArthur Park,” of course, already had history long before Donna got hold of it. Written by Jimmy Webb and first turned into a major hit by Richard Harris in 1968, the song became something else entirely when Summer, Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte pulled it into the disco universe a decade later.
Her version arrived as part of the sprawling “MacArthur Park Suite” on 1978’s Live and More. Edited into a single, it went all the way to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1978 — Donna Summer’s first chart-topper on the Hot 100 — and stayed there for three weeks.
So when she revisited it nearly three decades later in Belgium, this was not simply Donna covering an old hit. This was Donna Summer returning to one of the records that helped turn her from disco superstar into full-blown pop institution.
One of the pleasures of these official archive drops is getting to see artists outside the compressed mythology that forms around them later. Donna Summer’s name will forever summon disco balls, “I Feel Love,” “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls” and the whole Queen of Disco crown — but the actual instrument was always the voice.
And “MacArthur Park” gives her room to use all of it. The song is famously excessive, melodramatic and completely uninterested in behaving like a tidy little pop single. That is exactly why Summer’s version works: she never apologizes for the scale of the thing. She climbs inside all that orchestral drama and somehow makes it feel like the song was waiting for her the entire time.
Twenty-one years after this performance and nearly five decades after her recording first hit No. 1, that still lands. So yes, Donna Summer estate: keep opening the vault. We are seated.
