Sunday’s Come Thru Vocals: No-Strings Romance Meets a Funk-Fueled Party

Carly Rae Jepsen makes a delicious mess of casual romance on “No Labels, I Love You,” while Chaka Khan and Lenny Kravitz have a different proposition: “Bring the Party.” One track wrestles with feelings that refuse to stay uncomplicated; the other finds its footing in love, perspective and the liberating instruction to turn the music on.
Two tracks. Two discoveries. One daily detour.
Come Thru Vocals is INYIM’s long-running daily music discovery series spotlighting voices and songs worth hearing. Selections may also move into Musique Dig’s Weekly Playlist and rotation on INYIM Radio.

Carly Rae Jepsen
Tune: No Labels, I Love You
WHY IT CAUGHT OUR EAR
Jepsen turns the supposedly simple arrangement of a no-strings romance into a full-blown emotional contradiction: the title insists on “no labels” while the feeling refuses to cooperate. On the Night half of Day and Night, her bright, insistent vocal hooks play against keys, synths and a rhythmic arrangement produced by Cole M.G.N. and co-produced by Midi Jones. It is a particular Carly specialty: making romantic confusion feel wonderfully singable.

Chaka Khan & Lenny Kravitz
Tune: Bring the Party
WHY IT CAUGHT OUR EAR
The Queen of Funk invites Lenny Kravitz into a jubilant exchange on Chakzilla, but this is no empty command to dance. With the two trading vocal lines against a buoyant pop-funk groove, the lyric questions the seduction of winning and fame before landing on love, faith and making the most of today. Chaka has always known how to make a message move; here, Kravitz helps her turn it into an invitation.
