Today’s Throwback Thursday belongs to thee one of one, Rihanna, performing one of the first undeniable hitters in her rapidly expanding catalog: “SOS.”

The future global icon took the stage at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards inside Copenhagen’s Bella Center on November 2, 2006. Rihanna was only 18, but the performance already carried the composure of somebody who knew the larger takeover was coming.

SOS Had Already Turned Rihanna Into A Serious Pop Contender

Released as the lead single from Rihanna’s second album, A Girl Like Me, “SOS” became her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. By the time she reached the EMAs, the song had already moved her beyond promising newcomer status and into the center of the international pop conversation.

The track’s instantly recognizable pulse draws from Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love,” turning an ’80s synth-pop foundation into a sleek mid-2000s emergency call. Rihanna’s delivery does the rest: cool, urgent and controlled even as the lyric describes complete romantic panic.

That contrast made “SOS” the ideal early Rihanna record. The song sounds desperate, but she never does. Even at 18, the performance projects the calm authority that would become one of her signatures.

The Copenhagen Performance Arrived One Year Before Umbrella

The timing makes the footage especially delicious now. This was months before “Umbrella” transformed Rihanna from a successful young singer into an era-defining superstar, yet the essential ingredients were already visible: command, instinct, star presence and an ability to make a massive televised stage feel entirely hers.

Rihanna entered the 2006 ceremony nominated for Best R&B, while “SOS” competed for Best Song. She may have still been building her catalog, but MTV had already placed her among the year’s biggest names.

A Snapshot Of Rihanna Just Before The Full Pop Takeover

Throwback performances become more valuable with time because they let us watch an artist before history has finished explaining who they are. In this footage, Rihanna is not yet the fashion force, beauty mogul and stadium-level institution the world now recognizes. She is a rising pop star making a very persuasive argument for what comes next.

And what came next was everything. But for these few minutes in Copenhagen, the story is simply Rihanna, “SOS” and an early reminder that the camera had already found somebody it would never be able to look away from.
