Safe Mind Finds the Sweet Spot Between Darkwave and Sleaze
Augustus Muller — one half of Boy Harsher — got together with fellow artist Cooper B. Handy, better known as LUCY, and the twosome manifested a supergroup of sorts called Safe Mind.
The pairing already had history. Handy previously joined Boy Harsher on “Autonomy,” and that chemistry clearly had somewhere else to go. Safe Mind became the next destination.
Enter “6′ Pole”: industrial, moody darkwave with enough dance-funk snap and indie-sleaze swagger to keep it from sinking into the shadows. It is dark, yes, but it moves — and that is exactly why it sticks.
Originally released in September 2024 through Nude Club, the track was written by Muller and Handy, with production from the pair alongside Jordan Romero. It later landed on Safe Mind’s debut album, Cutting the Stone.
The accompanying video was directed by Muller and drops the duo into a wonderfully unruly house-party setting. Muller described the idea as Gummo meets SLC Punk — less polished fantasy, more cool freaky people staring straight into the camera and being completely themselves.
That messy, mischievous energy fits the song beautifully. “6′ Pole” has the kind of groove that sounds like it wandered out of a basement club at 2 a.m., grabbed something from the fridge and decided it was staying for the afterparty.
