Nightly News Packs Air Force One, AI Fears and a Wild News Cycle

NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas September 9, 2026 episode

Broadcasting 1, 2! It’s time to get actual and factual with the one and only handsome Tom Llamas. The September 9, 2026 edition of NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas packed a very 2026 mix of presidential travel drama, war headlines, a deadly cargo-plane crash, hurricane recovery, AI anxiety and even Apple’s latest hardware flex into one evening broadcast.

The lead oddity came before President Donald Trump even boarded Air Force One: an inflatable emergency slide on the new aircraft deployed on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews, delaying his departure for Dallas. The older Air Force One was brought out as a backup while crews dealt with the issue.

Air Force One’s Emergency Slide Became an Instant Lead Story

The emergency slide deployed before Trump boarded the aircraft, forcing a delay while personnel examined the plane. CBS News later reported, citing sources familiar with the matter, that a member of the Air Force crew had accidentally triggered the slide.

The September 9 broadcast also covered Trump saying the war with Iran would end “after the election,” along with new U.S. strikes on Iranian oil tankers and continuing developments in the conflict.

An AI Researcher’s Resignation Added a Much Darker Warning

Another major segment focused on Jacob Coxon, a former researcher at Anthropic and OpenAI who publicly resigned from Anthropic while warning that leading AI companies were racing toward increasingly powerful systems without adequate safeguards.

Coxon wrote that people building advanced AI “earnestly believe” the technology could kill humanity by the end of the decade. His warning was not presented as an established prediction of what will happen, but as a stark statement of the level of risk some researchers inside the industry believe advanced AI may pose.

The Rest of the Broadcast Did Not Exactly Calm Things Down

NBC also showed new video from the deadly cargo-plane crash in Miami, covered Hurricane Lowell’s devastation on Kauai, and moved through the rest of the night’s national and international headlines. The official episode description highlighted the Air Force One slide, Trump’s Iran comments and the Miami crash among the broadcast’s top stories.

And because apparently that still was not enough for one evening, the program also touched on Apple unveiling its first foldable iPhone and a dramatic restaurant shooting attempt in Ohio that was stopped by a waiter.

One thing is certain: this was not one of those “quiet news day” broadcasts. Between an accidental aircraft evacuation slide, geopolitical developments, deadly weather and crash coverage, existential AI warnings and consumer-tech news, Llamas had a full plate before the opening music had even stopped echoing.
