B-Phlat Talks Craft, Frugal Flips and the Story Behind Her Name
It’s been a minute since we checked in with the extraordinary B-Phlat — never a stranger around here, and always a pleasure to see still doing her thing.
The veteran comedian stopped by The Green Room podcast, Episode 6, during VIP Comedy Experience’s women’s appreciation show at The Vault Cafe & Cabernet in Rochester, New York. And what starts as a backstage comedy check-in quickly turns into a surprisingly revealing conversation about nearly three decades in the business, how she actually builds jokes, the strange history of her stage name and the completely separate creative life she has built renovating rooms on tiny budgets.
In other words: B-Phlat apparently does not know how to have just one lane.

She Quit Her Job in 1997 and Never Really Looked Back
Asked how long she has been doing comedy, B-Phlat says she has never really sat down and counted the years. She does, however, remember the milestone that matters: she quit her day job in 1997.
That little detail immediately reframes the conversation. This is not somebody casually reflecting on a few good years in clubs. B-Phlat has been treating comedy as a business for decades — incorporating herself, trademarking the name and handling all the less glamorous grown-up parts that come with turning funny into a profession.
She even jokes through the administrative headaches: trademark renewals, fake social-media accounts, a hacked website and people impersonating her online. Her attitude is basically that she knows what business she is in, so she handles it and keeps moving.
B-Phlat Records Every Show So She Can Critique Herself
The most interesting stretch for comedy nerds comes when host Goodknews asks about her writing process.
B-Phlat says her mind is always racing, which means ideas arrive faster than she can fully develop them. Instead of sitting down and writing polished jokes from beginning to end, she keeps notes and little booklets around the house and starts with bullet points.
If an idea still makes her laugh when she returns to it, then she knows there may be something there. From there, she expands the thought, puts it onstage and starts adding to it in front of an audience.
But the real discipline is what happens afterward. B-Phlat says she has recorded every show she has done since 2014, while performances from before that survive on cassette. She listens back because, as she explains, she cannot properly improve the material without critiquing herself.
That also explains why her crowd work can feel so quick. The host points out that she had already taken things they experienced earlier that day and worked them into her set that same night. The notebook may start the joke, but the room finishes it.
Her “Frugal Flips” Put a $200 Ceiling on the Makeover
Then the interview takes a hard left into interior design — and somehow it makes complete sense.
B-Phlat talks about her Frugal Flips, room makeovers built around a deceptively strict rule: she wants to transform one space in somebody’s home while spending no more than about $200. The person can buy one new item if necessary, but almost everything else has to be created from what is already there.
She has turned bicycles into wall-mounted bars and old suitcases into seating, and says she had completed roughly 15 flips around the country at the time of the interview. Her podcast community and fans help support the projects and weigh in on which spaces she tackles.
The projects are not simply bargain-makeover stunts, either. B-Phlat says recipients generally have some kind of disability or other circumstance keeping them from getting the space together themselves. Her goal is to come in, work with what they already own and make one room feel completely different.
She describes an eight-week planning process before the physical two-day flip: photos come in, she draws directly over them, sends design options back, learns how the person actually uses the room and then tries to make the finished space match the drawings.
It is basically the same process as her comedy in another medium — idea, sketch, test, revise, execute.
And Yes, the B-Phlat Name Has a Whole Story
Eventually, Goodknews asks the question that has probably followed her for years: where did “B-Phlat” actually come from?
The original nickname, she says, came from a man she dated while working at a law firm who teased her by calling her “B flat.” She later flipped the joke into something she could own and brand.
Her explanation of the stylized spelling is wonderfully specific: the B connects to Beverly, the “Ph” to Philly, the L in her logo nods to “the Lou” — St. Louis — and the A is worked into a triangle/arch idea tied to her identity and Delta Sigma Theta connection.
Only B-Phlat could take a joke about a flat backside and turn it into intellectual property with geography, graphic design and sorority symbolism attached.
And that is really the charm of the whole episode. Between the career talk, design projects and backstage riffing, B-Phlat comes across exactly as she does onstage: fast, observant, practical, ridiculous when necessary and always building the next thing.
