Written by John Rzeznik and Derek Fuhrmann, “Over You” is a compact pop-rock ballad about separation, hindsight and the irritating discovery that time has not completed the emotional paperwork. The relationship may be finished, yet every photograph, memory and night keeps reopening what was supposed to be closed.
Rzeznik sings from the perspective of someone who finally understands the damage after the other person is gone. The performance does not beg for a giant theatrical breakdown. Instead, his familiar rasp carries the apology, regret and stubborn truth at the center of the chorus: there is simply no getting over this person.
Calling “Over You” an official sequel to “Iris” would be false—but emotionally, they live in neighboring rooms. Both songs understand longing as something physical. “Iris” reaches toward the person who might finally see you; “Over You” looks backward after that connection has already escaped.
