Tuesday Drifts From Sleepwalking Pop to a Southern Soul Side-Eye
Tuesday’s Come Thru Vocals pairs Holly Rivas’ “Sleepwalking” with Hot Sauce’s “Mama’s Baby (Daddy’s Maybe),” turning romantic frustration into two very different kinds of bite. One is cool, wounded modern pop; the other is a deliciously pointed slab of early-’70s Southern soul, with both voices refusing to make disappointment sound polite.
Two tracks. Two discoveries. One daily detour.
Come Thru Vocals is INYIM’s long-running daily music discovery series spotlighting voices and songs worth hearing. Selections may also move into Musique Dig’s Weekly Playlist and rotation on INYIM Radio.
Holly Rivas
Tune: “Sleepwalking”
WHY IT CAUGHT OUR EAR
“Sleepwalking” draws us in through Holly Rivas’ vocal presence and the song’s hazy, late-night pull. There is a dreamlike tension to the track that fits its title without overplaying the mood, letting the performance carry the emotional weight.
Hot Sauce
Tune: “Mama’s Baby (Daddy’s Maybe)”
WHY IT CAUGHT OUR EAR
Fronted by Rhonda Washington, Hot Sauce turns “Mama’s Baby (Daddy’s Maybe)” into a sly piece of Southern soul with teeth. Released on Volt in 1973, the groove stays warm and unhurried while Washington delivers the warning with enough poise and attitude to make every line sting just a little harder.
