Six Sunday Morning Stories for Curiosity, Chaos & a Little Honey

It’s CBS News Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley time — and this round of INYIM picks is exactly why the show remains one of television’s great little escape hatches. We pulled six stories built to fuel the brain, the imagination and a little casual-whimsy Sunday wandering.
This week’s INYIM six move from Patti LaBelle to coyotes, then underground at the Lincoln Memorial, into the upside-down and unreasonable reality of children held in ICE detention, across the shifting world of diamonds and, finally, into the very specific magic of a honey sommelier. Television wandering. The good kind.

Six Sunday Morning Detours
Music legend, urban wildlife, hidden history, immigration detention, diamonds under pressure and honey with a trained palate — this is why Sunday Morning still knows how to wander.

Patti LaBelle Is Still Thee Legend

Legendary singer Patti LaBelle has been performing for six decades, and at 82 she is still very much Patti LaBelle. Correspondent Tracy Smith meets her in Philadelphia for a conversation about her career, staying power and what it means to finally accept that “legend” label without pretending she hasn’t earned it.
Living With Coyotes — Because They’re Already Living With Us

Once concentrated in parts of the West and Southwest, coyotes now live in every state except Hawaii. Conor Knighton looks at how they became part of places like Chicago, the roles they hold in Native American stories and art, and what happens when one of North America’s most adaptable predators figures out the suburbs better than some humans have.
Under the Lincoln Memorial Is a Whole Other Monument

For more than a century, the 50,000-square-foot Undercroft beneath the Lincoln Memorial remained mostly out of public view. Built to keep the monument from sinking into Washington’s soft ground, the cavernous support structure is now part of a museum experience tracing the memorial’s construction and its later life as a stage for the civil rights movement. Faith Salie goes underground.
Children “Held Like Criminals” Inside ICE Detention

This one is not a casual-whimsy detour. Jim Axelrod reports that more than 6,300 children under 18 had been detained by federal immigration authorities during President Trump’s second term, with nearly half held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center outside San Antonio. CBS speaks with a family held there for almost four months and with Rep. Joaquin Castro, who has called for Dilley to be shut down over what he describes as inhumane conditions. The Trump administration and facility operator CoreCivic dispute allegations of substandard care.
Are Diamonds Really Forever? Antwerp Is Feeling the Pressure

For more than five centuries, Antwerp has sat at the center of the global diamond business, with an extraordinary share of the world’s rough stones passing through its district. Chris Livesay looks at the economic and cultural pressures now testing that legacy — because apparently even diamonds can have an existential crisis.
Meet Marina Marchese, America’s Honey Sommelier

And finally, because Sunday Morning knows exactly when we need something wonderfully specific: Marina Marchese, described by CBS as America’s first honey sommelier. Correspondent Serena Altschul gets into how trained tasting can identify subtle differences between honeys and what shoppers should watch for when they want the real stuff. A honey sommelier! See? This is why we wander.
