A House Classic Gets Thee Friendly Fires Treatment
Thee mid-2000s indie-dance heroes Friendly Fires have unleashed a far-out, super-duper-nova cover of the house classic “Lack of Love.”
The original, released in 1988 by Charles B & Adonis, is one of those acid-house records that never really stopped glowing. Friendly Fires have carried it with them for years, and now they have finally given it a new home without sanding away what made the original special in the first place.

Drummer Jack Savidge explained that the Charles B & Adonis production had been hovering around the top of Friendly Fires’ own internal charts for more than a decade, calling it an important record when they started the band and an important one still.
He described the original as something that squelches, fizzes, yearns and emotes — essentially secular gospel music built to bang on a dance floor forever. The goal with the cover was simple enough: stay faithful to the source, then let it drift somewhere recognizably Friendly Fires.
That is exactly why the pairing works. Friendly Fires have always lived somewhere between indie-pop structure and club-music instinct, so “Lack of Love” does not feel like an oddball detour. It sounds more like a band reaching back toward one of the records that helped wire their nervous system in the first place.
And our happy feet are absolutely not sitting this one out. This brand-new, spankin’ cover is pure dance-floor business — bright, physical and made to move.
The trio are also heading into festival season, with appearances lined up for Citadel on July 14 and Standon Calling from July 25–28.
