In 1961, Even the “Modern” Workplace Came With Gender Rules
This Labor Day weekend, we’re taking a very different kind of trip to work: back to September 1961, when BBC Television’s educational programming was explaining what employment might look like for young women inside a supposedly modern self-service grocery shop.
Presented by Peter West for BBC Schools, the film is fascinating less because the supermarket now looks vintage than because the expectations around work do. The self-service shop was being presented as modern, efficient and forward-looking — but the career possibilities being shown to girls were still framed by the era’s very specific ideas about who should do what.
That makes the clip an unexpectedly perfect Labor Day time capsule. Technology changes. Retail changes. Uniforms change. The language around who belongs in which job can take much longer.
Viewed 65 years later, what once functioned as straightforward career guidance also shows just how much social instruction was baked into ordinary educational television. This was not simply a lesson about a grocery store. It was also a lesson about the world young viewers were being told to expect when they entered the workforce.
And that is where the footage gets especially interesting. The shop itself represents progress: customers choosing goods directly from shelves, a changing retail system and a workplace adapting around it. But “modern” did not automatically mean equal.
