Rock Is Not Dead — It Just Keeps Sneaking Back Through Pop
“Allergic” showcases something we at INYIM have been talking about for years now: rock is not dead. It has just been taking the scenic route back into the mainstream.
And we are not talking about indie rock, dance-punk or post-alt — those scenes never really stopped moving. They have continued to pulsate, mutate and produce groovy new artists and records whether the center of pop culture was paying attention or not.
We mean that bigger, louder, mainstream rock language: the ’90s KROQ-esque alternative, the ’70s and ’80s arena-sized guitar drama, the hair-metal excess, the old-school rock ’n’ roll charge and even the pop-rock hybrids that once lived comfortably on Top 40 radio.
“Allergic” Feels Like a New Wave of Bubblegum Rock
Claire is not suddenly making hard rock. “Allergic” is lighter on its feet than that. But underneath the sugar is a high-voltage, guitar-fueled pulse that gives the song more bite than your standard polished pop single.
It reminded us of something we recently heard from Ron Dante while discussing the old “bubblegum pop” label on Billy Corgan’s podcast. Dante’s framing was simple: sometimes what people call bubblegum pop is really bubblegum rock.
That phrase fits Claire here. Not retro cosplay. Not a fake leather-jacket rock era. Not another “rock is back!” false alarm. Just a young songwriter taking pop melody, crunchy guitars and restless energy and making them all live in the same room.
So yes, we are declaring “Allergic” one of 2026’s better arguments for a new wave of bubblegum rock.
The Timing Makes Sense After My Lover
Claire’s second album, My Lover, arrived in February 2026 and already showed a songwriter stretching beyond the breezy bedroom-pop image many listeners still associate with her 2020 breakout “Backyard Boy.”
The deluxe edition now extends that world to 18 tracks, adding “Allergic,” “Rocket,” “Just A Man,” “Paper Arms” and “Water The Flowers.” “Allergic” sits naturally in that expansion: immediate enough to hit on first listen, but textured enough to suggest Claire is still deciding just how far she wants to push the guitars next.
