Zephyring back 42 years to when Saturday mornings belonged to Muppet Babies.

Zephyring 42 years ago, Muppet Babies made its CBS debut on September 15, 1984 at 9 a.m. — Jim Henson’s first animated series built around his Muppet characters and one of those Saturday-morning shows that lodged itself permanently into a generation’s memory.
Let’s transport back for a moment to its original CBS run, nursery chaos and all. The series spun out of the baby-Muppet sequence in The Muppets Take Manhattan, then turned Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Animal, Scooter and the rest into tiny imagination machines whose playroom could become practically anywhere.

From 1984 through 1991, the show became one of CBS’s Saturday-morning anchors. In its first season it went head-to-head with NBC’s The Smurfs, and Muppet Babies quickly became a ratings winner for CBS — eventually ranking among the most-watched Saturday-morning programs of its era and collecting multiple Emmy Awards along the way.
The formula was deceptively smart. Instead of simply shrinking familiar characters and calling it a day, the series treated imagination like the main event. Movie clips, live-action footage, photographic backgrounds and pop-culture parody all got folded into the babies’ fantasy worlds, which is a big reason the show still feels more inventive than a standard “kid version” spinoff.

And then there was the music. Alan O’Day and Janis Liebhart wrote more than 100 songs for the series, while the instantly recognizable theme was written by Hank Saroyan and Rob Walsh. That is an important little correction to the fuzzy memory bank: O’Day and Liebhart were major musical forces on the show, but they did not write the opening theme itself.
By the time the original run ended in 1991, Muppet Babies had lasted eight seasons and 107 episodes. More importantly, it helped prove there was a whole separate life for the Muppets in animation — and a whole generation still hears that theme and instantly knows exactly what Saturday morning felt like.
So for today’s Zephyring, we’re going straight back to the nursery. Tiny Muppets, giant imaginations, and television that knew how to make staying in pajamas feel like an event.
