Forty Years Later, Ponyland’s Original Rainbow Still Shines

Zephyring 40 years ago, on September 15, 1986, My Little Pony trotted onto our television sets!
The colorful ponies had already appeared in two animated specials and that summer’s My Little Pony: The Movie, but this was the moment Ponyland became a regular TV destination. Produced by Sunbow Productions and Marvel Productions from Hasbro’s toy phenomenon, the series galloped into syndication with rainbows, songs, witches, goblins and a surprisingly serious amount of magical peril.

Technically, the pony adventures aired as the first segment of My Little Pony ’n Friends. The second half rotated through other Hasbro worlds, including The Glo Friends, MoonDreamers and Potato Head Kids. It was one of those gloriously specific 1980s television packages where the toy box did not merely open—it received an entire programming block.
The debut began with “The End of Flutter Valley,” a 10-part story that continued the world established in the 1986 movie. Over two seasons, the series delivered 65 pony segments and kept the adventure going through September 1987. Megan, Molly and Danny joined the residents of Ponyland as they defended Paradise Estate from creatures that were often far more menacing than the pastel packaging suggested.

That is part of why the original still zephyrs so sweetly through the memory. It was cute without being toothless, sugary without leaving adventure behind and anchored by an opening theme that could permanently move into a child’s brain after one afternoon in front of the television.
Four decades later, My Little Pony has been reinvented for new generations, but this first syndicated run remains its own unmistakable pastel time capsule. Let’s transport back.
